On Dec. 8 following the Pearl Harbor attack, county officials requested a vessel be named USS San Bernardino, prompting the conversion of a 1928 diesel yacht that served in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters during WWII; local residents continue to honor this legacy in annual remembrances.
