  • Deana Bohnsack of Victorville submitted outstanding photos of Silverwood Lake in Hesperia—a favorite destination for local residents (the images capture the lake's scenic beauty) and a cherished spot in San Bernardino County.  San Bernardino County
  • On May 14, the Morongo Band of Mission Indians awarded nearly $400,000 in grants to 80 nonprofits to support social, education, and health services in San Bernardino and Riverside counties—each organization received up to $5,000.   • Ontario International Airport has launched the Toiletries for Troops program at its security screening areas to let passengers donate new or lightly used toiletries that exceed TSA limits to support military members. CRIME NEWS

  • On May 25, Fontana police answered a domestic dispute call at an apartment in the 9100 block of Date Avenue in Fontana and shot a suspect (who reportedly pointed a gun at officers), with the suspect taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead; an investigation by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and an internal review by Fontana police are underway (no officer was hurt).  Fontana Herald News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Calico Ghost Town is a historic site located three miles north of Interstate 15 between Barstow and Yermo where silver was discovered on April 6th, sparking mine operations that once produced $86 million in silver and $45 million in borax. Walter Knott restored the town in 1951 and donated it to the county in 1966—today it is part of the county's regional parks system with shops, restaurants, and camping opportunities.  San Bernardino County

  • San Bernardino County’s Apple Valley Airport hosted two inspiring mornings last week for high desert homeschool students, where they saw a replica of Captain McConnell’s FU-910 fighter jet and learned from aviation experts + Melissa Carrillo organized the trips after her son’s interest, offering hands-on insight into flight training, emergency response, and career pathways + the event showcased real-world opportunities in aviation.  San Bernardino County

HEALTH NEWS

  • The San Bernardino County Department of Behavioral Health held a live podcast recording on May 21 that focused on building mental strength with advice on care, connection, culture and change. Panelists including Dr. Chanté D. DeLoach led a meditation for 200 people — teaching simple daily steps to boost mental health.  San Bernardino County
  • San Bernardino County Public Health urged residents to update their measles vaccines as cases rose nationally to over 1,000 with three confirmed deaths and 11 cases reported statewide, while the county held 228 free immunization events that gave more than 9,400 doses to over 3,600 individuals. Officials said the two-dose MMR vaccine—given at 12 months and between 4–6 years—is key to protecting children and high-risk groups against measles.  San Bernardino County
