COMMUNITY NEWS

  • San Bernardino County Animal Care hosted its first California Adopt-A-Pet Day event at Devore Animal Shelter on June 7, where 32 pets—26 dogs and six cats—were adopted by local families and partner rescue organizations. The free adoption event highlighted strong community support and helped give many pets a fresh start.  San Bernardino County

CRIME NEWS

  • Suspects Jonathan Mota (42) and Karina Rivera (34) were arrested in a joint law enforcement operation in Arizona for the homicide of Fontana man Valentin Martinez, who was shot on June 6, and they will be extradited to San Bernardino County as the investigation continues.  Fontana Herald News

CULTURE NEWS

  • San Bernardino County Department of Behavioral Health and Arts Connection will host the Into Light exhibition from June 16 to Aug. 16 at Garcia Center for the Arts in downtown San Bernardino—showing original portraits and personal stories about drug addiction. The exhibit’s opening reception is set for June 18 at 4 p.m. —it aims to change views on addiction.  San Bernardino County

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Six Fontana Unified elementary and middle school students — including representatives from Mango, West Randall, and Wayne Ruble — will represent Team USA Robotics at the World Robot Olympiad in Panama on October 19 to 21. They will begin two weeks of intensive robotics training this July — a program to build coding and robot-building skills — as they prepare for the global contest.  Inland Empire Community News
  • The San Bernardino County School Boards Association recognized four Fontana Unified School District representatives at an awards ceremony on April 21 — honoring their contributions to student achievement, leadership, community service, and education. Fontana High School principal Ofelia Hinojosa, who will retire after more than 30 years of service, received a Distinguished Service Award while A.B. Miller High School dance teacher Nicole Robinson and Redwood Elementary School volunteers Jade Centeno and Maria Medina earned Education Medals of Honor.  Fontana Herald News
  • Pedals for Progress was founded by eHigh Fontana teacher Kari Salinas with students Willow Romero and Jada Jackson to provide free refurbished bikes that help students get to school and reduce environmental waste. The nonprofit will include a Student Board Membership Plan giving high school seniors a role in decision-making after its debut at Entrepreneur High School where seven students received bikes.  Fontana Herald News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • San Bernardino County’s first major wildfire of the year started Tuesday afternoon south of Apple Valley and Lucerne Valley and burned over 4,000 acres in less than 12 hours — homes were evacuated and shelters set up at Sitting Bull Academy and the Victorville Fairgrounds as local and state agencies work to control the blaze.  San Bernardino County

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County officials have partnered with the County Museum to offer monthly marriage services at two historic sites — the museum in Redlands hosts ceremonies every third Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with discounted admission, while the Maria Merced Williams and John Rains House in Rancho Cucamonga holds weddings every third Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with free tours — to give couples a memorable setting to start their new life.  San Bernardino County
  • San Bernardino County Veterans Affairs offices launched a new marketing campaign in May to help veterans and families get free benefits and services—while the department honored veteran service officer Shanell Payne with the Public Service Recognition Award for Excellence. The campaign will use radio, streaming TV, buses, billboards, DMV waiting areas, online video and social media to counter claim sharks.  San Bernardino County
  • The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors approved the 2025-26 budget on June 10 which totals about $10.5 billion and sets aside $205.2 million for new initiatives to boost homeless services, wildfire prevention, and public infrastructure—aimed at maintaining essential services and stability.  Inland Empire Community News
