  • Finn is a one-year-old Labrador Retriever mix at the Devore Animal Shelter—he loves playing fetch, follows commands, and is available for adoption with spay/neuter, microchipping and most vaccines included.  San Bernardino County

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Henry J. Kaiser started Kaiser Steel in 1942 in Fontana to help make ships faster during World War II—his mill set a record by building a ship in four days and gave jobs to over 2,500 workers with its own paper and hospital. When the mill closed in the 1980s, part of the land became the Auto Club Speedway while a section still makes steel, and Kaiser is honored with a street and a high school.  San Bernardino County

EDUCATION NEWS

  • San Bernardino County Preschool Services Department completed its first Teacher Aide Cohort program to help fill early childhood staffing gaps by combining online classes with hands-on school work — 75% of participants finished and are now eligible to work. A second cohort started on June 16 to train more aides and meet local demand.  San Bernardino County

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Donald Purdey of Redlands sent in photos of his favorite county spot — Carriage Trail. This 2.8-mile trail offers a place for hiking, mountain biking, and bird watching and is part of the San Timoteo Nature Trails that cover 5.23 miles and are open all year.  San Bernardino County

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • San Bernardino County urges residents to enroll in its free alert service TENS+ that sends text messages with wildfire warnings+ evacuation orders when emergencies occur. The county also advises families to prepare a go-bag, an emergency plan, and keep vehicles fueled in case quick action is needed.  San Bernardino County
  • San Bernardino County Public Works broke ground on July 1 for the Glen Helen Parkway Bridge and Road Improvement Project — a $52.2 million effort to build a new bridge, add bike lanes, sidewalks, and improved storm drainage near Glen Helen Regional Park and Devore — to improve travel safety and accessibility. The project, which spans the Cajon Wash near the railroad tracks, will finish by spring.  San Bernardino County
  • San Bernardino County Child Support Services opened a new resource room today at 10417 Mountain View Ave. in Loma Linda to help families with child support cases, payment processing, job searches and access to family programs — the room operates Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  San Bernardino County
  • San Bernardino County Fire welcomed the Tower 19 Firefighter Recruit Class, who completed rigorous physical training, classroom instruction and live-fire simulations before being assigned to stations across the county. The new firefighters are ready to respond to structure fires, medical emergencies and wildland incidents with dedication and professionalism — their class motto Bestowed with Purpose underscores their commitment to public service.  San Bernardino County

HEALTH NEWS

  • The San Bernardino County Department of Behavioral Health, with Arts Connection and the Garcia Center for the Arts, will host the 2024 Illuminating Voices poetry event on Saturday, July 26 at the Garcia Center for the Arts in San Bernardino—local poets will recite works that explain the damage caused by drug addiction and fentanyl overdoses.  San Bernardino County
  • Last week, First 5 San Bernardino and Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital held poolside demos that taught parents how to prevent heatstroke, drowning, and other summer injuries — experts explained water safety and proper car seat installation — as part of the Kid Safe Summer campaign ahead of the Fourth of July. Local media covered the event, and the demonstrations provided hands-on tips to help caregivers keep children safe during outdoor summer activities.  San Bernardino County
