- ➤ Historical records show that Montclair began when Serrano Indians built a village along a creek once named Arroyo de los Alisos by Captain Juan Bautista D’Anza and Mrs. Edward Fraser founded The Township of Marquette in 1897, spurring land surveys in 1900 and citrus orchard development. Residents incorporated their community on April 25, 1956—then voted to rename it Montclair on April 8, 1958—and today the city is home to over 37,000 people. San Bernardino County
