COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Heather Hill of Redlands shared photos of Bertha Peak in the San Bernardino Mountains, a 7-mile hike with a 1,289-foot climb offering views of Big Bear Lake and Holcomb Valley + the trail has rocky sections and radio towers on the summit. Visitors must park at the Cougar Crest Trailhead in Big Bear and secure an Adventure Pass from the San Bernardino National Forest + hiking permits are not required.  San Bernardino County
  • Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga will host Hostile Terrain 94 where community members help create a visual record of over 4,400 migrant deaths along the US and Mexico border by completing toe tags for a wall map. Workshops will run at the Center for the Arts room 210 (2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays from Aug. 25 to Dec. 9) to add details to the exhibit.  Fontana Herald News

  • Nathan Dawood, 54, from San Fernando Valley was found guilty of wire fraud and money laundering for taking more than $2.2 million from an elderly victim’s trust by tricking him into moving his home and inherited real estate to companies he controlled — a sentencing hearing is set for Dec. 8.  Fontana Herald News

  • The San Bernardino County Museum earned 12 NACo Achievement Awards — double its previous total — for programs including a new STEAM Lab for Kids and improved historical projects that highlight its commitment to cultural excellence.  San Bernardino County

  • Zahra Razi, a math and computer science teacher at Wayne Ruble Middle School, recently earned national honors when she was named to the ISTE+ASCD 20 to Watch Award and selected as a Generation AI Luminary for her work in creating innovative lessons in artificial intelligence.  Fontana Herald News
  • Fontana Unified School District tapped 12 new leaders for the 2025–26 school year—these include interim and full-time assignments at the district level and school leadership roles intended to better meet student needs. Christopher Hollister and Patricia Corral assume new district roles while several schools, including Fontana High and Live Oak, welcome new principals as part of a strategic reorganization.  Fontana Herald News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • San Bernardino County Veterans Affairs received a 2025 NACo Achievement Award for its new website that helps veterans access services and benefits—this innovation shows the county’s strong commitment to supporting its veteran community.  San Bernardino County
  • The Board of Supervisors approved funding for community projects, including over $450K to support a sexual assault facility, youth training programs, senior services, and public safety improvements, and secured a $375K grant for the Sheriff’s Department. The board also updated road maintenance projects, rezoning plans, and a tennis court rehabilitation project to boost local infrastructure — efforts that will enhance public services and safety across San Bernardino County.  San Bernardino County
  • San Bernardino County’s SPARK program graduated 132 youth + 48 foster youth at Bear Springs Hotel, where they earned certificates and job resources to build skills for future county work. The initiative began with a pilot on May 3 and countywide applications opened on March 15 to offer hands-on public service training and mentoring from county staff.  San Bernardino County

HEALTH NEWS

  • The board of directors of the San Gorgonio Memorial Healthcare District approved a letter of intent to form a management agreement between San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital and Desert Care Network. Hospital CEO Steve Barron said the move will benefit patients—negotiations will continue over the coming months as final terms are worked out.  Fontana Herald News
