COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The San Bernardino County Library hosted Galaxy Nights at the Janice Horst Branch Library in Lucerne Valley, where about 150 people gathered to explore the night sky through professional telescopes and hands-on learning stations provided by partners like Avantus—families also enjoyed galaxy-themed crafts, prize drawings, and warm beverages from Brew and Moo Coffee. The event highlighted local efforts to spark interest in science while offering a fun, community-focused evening.  San Bernardino County
  • First 5 San Bernardino partnered with the Chino Youth Museum on September 30 to host a birthday party for Potter the Otter—marking the museum’s 25th anniversary, the celebration offered free books, cake, crafts, and sing-alongs for over 30 preschool children and their families. The Gift a Kid a Book campaign has provided over 10,000 books across San Bernardino County since 2022 to boost early literacy.  San Bernardino County

CULTURE NEWS

  • San Bernardino County Assessor-Recorder-County Clerk Josie Gonzales announced that the Halloween Marriage Services event will return on Oct. 31 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Calico Ghost Town in Yermo—couples must schedule appointments by Oct. 28 and are encouraged to dress in Halloween or western attire.  San Bernardino County

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Donald Purdey of Redlands submitted photos of his favorite county destination— the Trona Pinnacles, natural spires up to 140 feet tall that formed underwater thousands of years ago. The landmark was named a National Natural Landmark in 1968—Hollywood films like Star Trek V and Lost in Space have filmed scenes there.  San Bernardino County

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The third episode of the Did You Know video series featured Board of Supervisors Chairman and Third District Supervisor Dawn Rowe—who shared a fun fact about Esri—and explained how the company’s map tools helped improve the county’s January homeless count.  San Bernardino County
  • The Board of Supervisors took actions on Oct. 7 by approving new behavioral health recovery housing, extending a maternal and neonatal outcomes agreement, accepting grants to fund crime lab training and preschool services, supporting citrus crop quarantine enforcement, and expanding library STEAM programming and juvenile justice services. They also approved internship programs for behavioral health—measures intended to further develop the county workforce and enhance community care.  San Bernardino County
  • San Bernardino County’s Office of Emergency Services will hold the Great ShakeOut — an earthquake drill scheduled for Oct. 16 at 10:16 a.m. that gives residents a chance to practice safety steps like Drop, Cover, and Hold On to be ready in case of a quake along the San Andreas Fault.  San Bernardino County
  • Gov. Gavin Newsom signed AB 385 today, letting San Bernardino County exchange a 4.2-acre parcel at Glen Helen Regional Park for new parkland—this law will boost local recreation and job opportunities and takes effect Jan. 1. The move follows plans by Assemblymember Ramos and Chairman Rowe to improve community access to outdoor spaces.  San Bernardino County

  • Bruzer is a six-year-old Staffordshire Terrier mix and Phil is a gentle two-year-old Shepherd mix who enjoy running and playing—both dogs are available for free adoption until October 31 at Devore and Big Bear Animal Shelters thanks to Spreen Subaru San Bernardino.  San Bernardino County
