- ➤ County Human Services—along with the CAO and HR—will host the 8th Annual Human Services Food Drive this October through Oct. 31 to raise $25,000 for the Holiday Basket program and turkey giveaway events designed to support families in need; in 2024, employees raised $19,532 and will now fund four events at Fort Irwin, Joshua Tree Elementary, Adelanto Stadium, and San Bernardino Valley College. All monetary donations will support CAPSBC’s programs to help low-income households during the holiday season. San Bernardino County

- ➤ Grammy winning producer IZ Avila will host his tenth annual Grooves & Ghouls at Fontana’s Stage Red, where a VIP lounge and custom menu will offer guests an immersive Halloween experience. The event will feature a $500 costume contest judged on creativity—star guests including DJ Nick Nac, Cece, Battlecat, Scoop DeVille, Tash and LaToiya Williams will bring classic hip hop, soulful energy and dancefloor beats. - ➤ Gold was discovered about 30 miles outside of Barstow in 1880, sparking the boom of Goldstone—a mining town that later became unprofitable and turned into a ghost town. NASA later repurposed the site into the Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex, and today the Goldstone Visitor Center at Harvey House in Barstow shares the area’s mining and space exploration history. - ➤ San Bernardino County Preschool Services Department is celebrating 60 years of Head Start programs during Head Start Awareness Month by enrolling children and connecting families with key services—like early education, meals, housing and healthcare. The program began in 1965 to help low-income children and now offers year-round support to ready kids for kindergarten. San Bernardino County
- ➤ Inland Empire education leaders hosted the annual Cash for College campaign kickoff at San Bernardino Valley College on Oct. 8 and urged families to complete the FAFSA or California Dream Act Application early—free workshops and local resources are available to help offset rising college costs. - ➤ Garner Holt Productions hosted its 3rd Annual Fall Kickoff at its Redlands headquarters to show how STEAM & animatronics can help underserved youth learn with fun, hands-on projects. The foundation will host the Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow Gala on November 8 to fund programs that give students access to career pathways & creative learning experiences. - ➤ Rialto School Board Trustee Joseph W. Martinez was named Distinguished Citizen of the Year by the California Inland Empire Scouting Council on October 7 at the Jesse Turner Community Center in Fontana—recognizing his service since 2008 and his support for STEM programs. - ➤ Robin West Mazzoni from Jurupa Valley submitted photos of the 25,500-acre Pioneertown Mountains Preserve that stretches from high 7,800-foot ridges into Pioneertown Valley and offers hiking trails, picnicking, wildlife viewing, birdwatching and seasonal wildflower viewing — the preserve is open from dawn to dusk at 51010 Pipes Canyon Rd. - ➤ San Bernardino County Office of Emergency Services launched the new Ready SB County App to help residents stay informed with real time alerts — interactive hazard maps and personalized safety tools. The free app offers evacuation zone maps and quick safety check ins and is available on App Store and Google Play. San Bernardino County
- ➤ Aaron Speer, recreation superintendent for Public Works Special Districts, has been named a finalist for the Senate District 29 Distinguished Man of the Year Award in recognition of his work in community recreation programs. He built parks and programs in Bloomington — a sign of his strong dedication — and county officials praise his leadership as a model of public service. San Bernardino County
- ➤ On Oct. 8, the San Bernardino County Public Defender’s Office hosted its Mobile Defense Program at Adelanto Plaza and Event Center to help over 200 residents clear low-level misdemeanor citations and fines—supporting better access to employment and housing opportunities. The program will hold its next event on Dec. 3 at Chaffey College Chino Campus from 12:30 to 4 p.m. to offer more record-clearing and court services. San Bernardino County
